Call for Resident Advisory Group Members on NYCHA's StoryMap
The Public Housing Community Fund (PHCF) is seeking up to five Resident Advisory Group Members to read and provide feedback on a long-form article for the New York City Housing Authority's StoryMap that reflects on its history and role in shaping New York City's culture—from its founding in 1935 to today. This one-week advisory position (08/03 - 08/07) offers a $300 stipend and the opportunity to share your insights, perspective, and opinions to help shape a research-driven narrative. Residents are not always consulted in the development of historical accounts about public housing, and institutional archives often exclude resident perspectives and stories. PHCF would like to hear directly from current residents and members of the NYCHA Tenant Association Board about how to center residents in a history of public housing. We would love to hear your thoughts on the following, for example:
Share your thoughts on how to include more resident accounts and personal narratives.
Provide suggestions on appropriate language to support diversity and inclusion.
Share unique insights and perspectives that reflect your NYCHA community and experience.
Advisory members must sign an agreement outlining the scope of the work and the rubric for providing feedback. Members can not share or make public any content provided during their participation as a reader. Upon completion, advisory members will be mailed a check to the name and address designated in the application by mid-August. Included below is an article abstract for the StoryMap:
The history of NYCHA and its exceptional longevity has often been explained via a focus on its institutional practices, such as its management, tenant selection process, policing, etc. This article attempts to tell NYCHA’s history from a different but complementary perspective by centering the residents and workers who are also important in the shaping of the authority’s longevity. These everyday people made NYCHA into a home, community, workplace, and a political battleground over decency and dignity. From NYCHA’s early years, residents and workers were not simply voiceless subjects being shaped by public housing; they were very much active in shaping and sustaining it.
Requirements:
Current NYCHA resident
At least 18 years old
Must be able to read and write in English

Must be available on Zoom, Friday, August 7th (time to be determined)
