  • SPECTRUM AWARDS $25,000 SPECTRUM DIGITAL EDUCATION GRANT TO PUBLIC HOUSING COMMUNITY FUND

Public Housing Community Fund Will Use the Funds to Bridge the Digital Divide in NYCHA Communities and Expand Its New York City Housing Authority Youth Tech Corps: Intergenerational Connections Program

New York, NY – September 27, 2023 – Spectrum today announced Public Housing Community Fund has received a $25,000 Spectrum Digital Education grant for its New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Youth Tech Corps: Intergenerational Connections program. In 2023, Spectrum is awarding $1.1 million total to 46 nonprofit organizations through Spectrum Digital Education, which supports broadband technology programs, education and training in unserved and underserved communities throughout the company’s service area.

The Public Housing Community Fund engages people and partners to invest in transformative programs that enhance the lives of over 500,000 residents living in 300 NYCHA communities across the five boroughs. The organization invests in programs focused on community health, financial empowerment, leadership development and workforce training for residents of NYCHA communities.

The organization’s NYCHA Youth Tech Corps: Intergenerational Connections program aims to bridge the digital divide by offering solutions to technology-related challenges in NYCHA communities across generations while providing career opportunities. During the 10-week program, NYCHA youth are paired with adult resident leaders to gain hands-on learning, advance their understanding of technology including social media and website development, and explore potential career paths. Upon completion of the program, youth participants and resident leaders earn a $250 stipend and receive a laptop.

“The importance of expanding access to essential broadband technologies, education and training is profound in our increasingly digital world,” said Rahman Khan, Group Vice President of Community Impact, Charter. “Through the 2023 Spectrum Digital Education grant program, Charter is partnering with valued nonprofits that share our commitment to create better opportunities for the communities we serve.”

"The Public Housing Community Fund is committed to providing programs like NYCHA Youth Tech Corps to support the needs of residents, provide educational opportunities, exposure to career pathways and foster intergenerational connections,” said Alex Zablocki, Public Housing Community Fund Executive Director. “With support from the Spectrum Digital Education Grant, public housing residents will learn important technology skills and help solve technology and communication issues facing NYCHA communities. As a partner with Spectrum, we look forward to bridging the digital divide at NYCHA and expanding the Corps to additional communities.”

Spectrum’s Commitment: $9 Million and Counting

Public Housing Community Fund is one of 46 nonprofit organizations across 14 states that Spectrum is supporting through the 2023 Spectrum Digital Education grants. Since the program’s 2017 launch, Spectrum has committed more than $9 million total to the initiative and has awarded 261 grants to 143 unique partners. As of September 2023, Spectrum Digital Education has helped to fund more than 30,000 digital education classes, distribute over 13,000 devices including laptops and support the creation of 157 tech labs.
